About Shanxi University

Shanxi University (SXU) is a public university in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi province in China. It was founded in 1902 as the Shansi Imperial University, one of the earliest modern universities in China that introduced western technologies and education. It was renamed Shanxi University in 1912, after the Xinhai Revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty. It has a long and rich history of academic excellence, cultural diversity, and social service. It is affiliated with the Province of Shanxi and is part of the Double First-Class Construction, a national initiative to build world-class universities and disciplines.

SXU has four campuses in Taiyuan, covering an area of about 180 hectares, with modern facilities and abundant greenery. The main campus, located in the south of the city, is known for its beautiful scenery and Lingnan-style architecture. The other campuses are the North Campus, the East Campus, and the New Campus. SXU has 23 schools and departments, offering 61 undergraduate programs, 23 graduate disciplines, 2 doctorate disciplines and 2 post-doctoral mobile stations. These programs cover nine discipline categories, such as economics, philosophy, the science of law, literature, history, science, engineering and others, with a total of 10 academic disciplines. SXU has a strong faculty team of over 1,200 members, including 800 full-time teachers, 300 professors and associate professors, and 200 doctoral and master’s degree holders. SXU also has a large student body of over 31,000 students, including 24,000 undergraduates and 7,000 graduates.

SXU has achieved remarkable results in scientific research and social service. It has undertaken over 1,000 scientific research projects at various levels, published over 4,000 academic papers and 100 books, and obtained over 200 patents and awards. SXU has also established extensive cooperation and exchange with over 40 universities and institutions from more than 20 countries and regions, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, and Hong Kong. SXU has also cultivated many outstanding alumni who have made significant contributions to various fields of society, such as Wu Weihua, a mathematician and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Yinhe, a sociologist and sexologist, and Wang Jianguo, a chemist and the winner of the third National Innovation Award.

SXU has a rich and vibrant campus life, with various student organizations and activities that cater for different interests and specialties, ranging from science and technology to art, culture and sport. SXU also has a well-equipped library, a sports center, a student center, a cafeteria, and a dormitory, providing students with a comfortable and convenient living and learning environment.
