About Sun Yat-sen University

Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) is a public research university in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. It was founded in 1924 by and named after Sun Yat-sen, a revolutionary and the founder of the Republic of China. The university is affiliated with the Ministry of Education, and co-funded by the Ministry of Education, SASTIND, and Guangdong Provincial Government. The university is part of Project 211, Project 985, and the Double First-Class Construction. The university’s motto is “Study Extensively, Inquire Accurately, Reflect Carefully, Discriminate Clearly, Practise Earnestly”

SYSU has five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals. The university’s main campus, commonly referred to as the South Campus, is located in Haizhu, Guangzhou, inheriting the campus from the former Lingnan University (est. 1888). The South Campus is divided into three regions of student dormitories and recreational facilities, teaching and research blocks and staff quarters. The campus grounds are also quite unique in its magnificent and historic foliage. The other campuses are North Campus, East Campus, Zhuhai Campus and Shenzhen Campus, each with its own features and characteristics.

SYSU is a comprehensive multidisciplinary university, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technical sciences, medical sciences, pharmacology and management sciences. It has 70 schools and departments, offering 42 undergraduate programs and 18 diploma programs. These programs cover nine discipline categories, such as engineering, physics, liberal arts, social sciences, environmental science, biology, chemistry, computer science, business, mathematics, psychology, economics, art and design. SYSU has a strong faculty team of over 17,000 members, including 800 full-time teachers, 300 professors and associate professors, and 200 doctoral and master’s degree holders. SYSU also has a large student body of over 65,000 full-time students and 10,000 adult students.

SYSU has achieved remarkable results in scientific research and social service. It has undertaken over 1,000 scientific research projects at various levels, published over 4,000 academic papers and 100 books, and obtained over 200 patents and awards. SYSU has also established extensive cooperation and exchange relationships with over 40 universities and institutions from more than 20 countries and regions, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, and Hong Kong.
